Yuck!

cat hair ball
source: mycathealthguide.com

When your cat grooms himself, fur balls are caused by the ingestion of hair. The best way to prevent hairballs is to remove as much of the loose hair as possible before your cat has the chance to ingest it. Brush your cat regularly. For long haired cat, you need to brush them everyday. For short haired cat, once a week is essential. Cats also have an instinct to know what helps them, so in this case, they sometimes eat grass outdoors to help passing the hairball.
